IWGP

August 6th, 2008

Now to be honest I hate 93% of drama tv shows because generally the story is X loves Y but Y loves Z who happens to be in love with a teacher/drug addict/police man etc and it’s this same crop of shit dropped into different environments whether it be a school, hotel resort or even the good old east end of London. So when a friend suggested let’s watch a Japanese drama I initially thought ‘you can fuck right off’ to my self quietly in my mind as it was proberly going to be a few school girls having wet dreams about a basket ball player or again a teacher. But when I herd the four letters IWGP I instantly said yes as those four letters rang a bell in the vast caverns of my mind. Upon watching the first 3-4 seconds I remember the name from a manga advert in the back of a tokyopop manga (hellsing if I’m not mistaken) and was further more interested. 7 YouTube videos later I finished the first episode and was quite please with it as there was no soppy dick story to be seen! If I had to explain it in a few words I’d have to say it’s kidadult hood in japan with a slightly comical touch. It has a not to bad main character, his good old buddy, the ‘g’ gang who are proberly Japans answer to ‘crips’ a crooked cop and a few chicks scattered here and there. I’m not going to type the story out but I can say it’s fucking great and even if you hate dramas (especially Asian ones) with passion you can still expect you’re self to fully enjoy this gem from Japan. Now if I only could find the rest of episode 2…

Wordpress on iPhone

August 5th, 2008

So I got my free upgrade to an iPhone 3G, from a standard iPhone, the other day. The only thing that is actually working better as compared to the old one is the volume generally. 3G when turned on leaves you with a single bar of signal strength and beats your battery life to a pulp, great can’t use it’s features but feel it’s downsides. GPS only worked once so far for me and doesn’t even in the slightest work out the way Steve Jobs showcased it in March. Internet speed? I wouldn’t know, with one bar it’s almost slower than EDGE, so much for that. Either way, I got for free and vann still use my old if so wanted to.

To get back to the actual reason of this post though…

I downloaded the Wordpress for iPhone application this morning in a cab on a way to a meeting, and tadah!!! All you read so far in this post has been written on my iPhone without having to use that useless browser. It’s really quite cool. This also meansvthat both Sean and me won’t have excuses anymore to not have time to update the blog, as he’s got one of these iPhone’s for poor people as well.

So yeah seems to work woot.

Shinohan = Website & Blog & Youtube Channel

July 26th, 2008

First post since the E3 I suppose. So today Google finally updated their page ranks again, unfortunately Shinohan received a blow and lost one bringing us down to 2 (which really is bad). This doesn’t come as a surprise to me though as we have been neglecting Shinohan a bit recently which comes mainly down to real life obligations which have to take priority. Every coin has two sides though (Oh btw. The Dark Knight was fucking ORESOME! - and yes that is due to the brilliant Joker performance by Heath Ledger!), our Youtube Channel rose from a PR3 to a PR5 giving us some Authority. We also started to receive loads of awards:

#6 - Most Subscribed (All Time) - Reporters - United Kingdom
#96 - Most Subscribed (All Time) - Reporters
#20 - Most Viewed (This Week) - Reporters - United Kingdom
#4 - Most Viewed (This Month) - Reporters - United Kingdom
#86 - Most Viewed (This Month) - Reporters
#1 - Most Viewed (All Time) - Reporters - United Kingdom
#13 - Most Viewed (All Time) - Reporters

So we will keep on going for that. Sometime over the course of this weekend I will also start to update Famitsu stuff that Saf has been working hard on so look out for that as well. I could keep on going on how SEO works right now, but I don’t wanna bore you with it. ;)

Until next time!

E3 2008 coverage - Sony Media Brief

July 15th, 2008

And here I am again after the Sony Media Brief with all you need to know and probably a lot stuff you don’t care about, but still it’s important!

It started off with a short retrospective on how far the Sony Computer Entertainment has come with its PlayStation brand. 15 years of gaming with Sony, which established some games which have been very popular in Japan over here in the west. Although games like Final Fantasy have been touched in accordance to the past we have gotten any updates to what we are about to receive. In fact the whole show was very much shooter driven with the odd exception here and there.

Resistance 2 was the first game that has been shown as we see a gigantic monster roam the streets, while you are running up a tower trying to find a spot to attack the monster… alien… thing. In the end all it comes down to is that the alien grabs you, miles above the ground that is, and you’ll have to literally ‘feed’ it with your RPG. It then slams you through several buildings which is presented in bullet time… although fancy, not really ground breaking!

Little Big Planet has finally gotten some updates and as we are anticipating its October release, we are just as much thrilled to witness all the user generated content that will follow its lead. Jack Tretton and LBP COMPANY created a level that served as a presentation for Sonys accomplishments over the last year, now imagine a presentation you’d have in Powerpoint or Keynote presented as a level which you manipulate as you like, sounds like a fun meeting for me once the game’s out. Apart from that nothing new really has been shown for Little Big Planet. As said before though, we can’t wait for the game to be shipped.

Nintendo being the market leader, rightfully so, and Microsoft might do… well whatever they are doing, Sony is the only company having three very successful platforms at the same time, which of course are PlayStation 3, PSP and yes the PS2 is still very much alive with as announced over 130 games being released for the PS2 in 2008.

PSN is coming in now with a lot of features which it definitely needs. Real games, non of that 2nd tier stuff like Pixel Junk, but games like Ratchet & Clank Future Quest for Booty which will be available for $14.99 within the PSN store. Other games which will be within the same price line that are new but at least look like real games are for example Crash Commando which looks very much like a classic Contra game but with neat graphics, fat princess a very cutsey game that seems to be quite brutal at the same time, Rag Doll Kung Fu: Fists of Plastic which looks a bit like a Smash Bros clone, of course not exactly but as much as Onimusha Blade Warriors is a Smash Bros clone. Now the one game that really stood out of this range was Siren Blood Curse which looked quite stunning - what it plays like is of course a completely different story and still needs to be seen.

Gran Turismo TV has been introduced which will offer HD feeds of real Motorsport to watched on your PlayStation 3 from around the world.

Now one of the bigger announcements was how the PS3 PSN store turns into iTunes… or is it the other way around with iTunes now selling games for my iPhone? The PSN store will deliver HD movie purchases AND rentals directly to your PS3. Now if you’ve seen the Microsoft Media Brief this might sound familiar, BUT Microsoft does not have FOX, MGM, Warner Bros, Disney, Paramount, Sony Pictures & Lionsgate under their broken laggy Vista $2,000 e-mail machines, or so a Microsoft executive described Vista himself. Who again has the same film companies under it’s license oh yes it’s Apple… so yes PSN… iTunes… all the same, I wish they would migrate somehow though. Oh it doesn’t end there, remember how you can rent or purchase a movie and pull it over to your iPhone or iPod touch? Exactly you can do that with your PSP as well now. The PSP may not be as versatile in regards to how you handle it, but the screen resolution makes more than up for that! Same as with iTunes you have progressive download, so you can start watching straight after you hit the download button (give 2 - 3 minutes of downloading to start). New titles will be added each week to keep the library which is huge already fresh and up to date. Oh and… been saying that a lot in this paragraph now, it goes live TONIGHT (July 15th 2008).

Here a list of what awaits us for the PSP:
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
Madden 09
Loco Roco 2
NBA 09
Super Stardust Portable
Lego Batman
Patapon 2
Buzz Master Quiz
Valkyria Chronicles

The next thing that has been talked about is the cooperation with Google and how to migrate the Sony PS3 with YouTube in which users can upload their videos have it rated by the community and just live within the community which will come by the end of this month (JULY 2008). This is going to be called LIVE WITH PLAYSTATION.

Sony Online Entertainment has announced DC Universe Online, which up to this point looks very interesting but also very static and very very beta. The idea to be your own hero or villain and to cooperate with Superman or maybe even the Joker to conspire against Batman sounds amazing, but so far it only ’sounds’ amazing.

And one last thing… YES! GOD OF WAR III will be coming to the PlayStation 3!

E3 2008 Coverage - Nintendo Media Brief

July 15th, 2008

Day two of the Electronic Entertainment Expo and this time it’s Nintendo’s turn to show off a few of the tricks they have hidden up their sleeves. Bear with me as we go through their presser in as much detail as I can type while watching.

0900 PST: Before anyone comes on stage, Nintendo have started their presser with images of happy-looking people from all ethnicities and ages playing various Nintendo consoles - I saw the DS, Wiimote and Wii Wheel in there somewhere. There is also a lot of blue light, perhaps to evoke the Wii’s flashing blue light whenever you get a message? Additionally, there’s funky music playing in the background but I’m not quite sure what that’s trying to say.

0906: The music changes and yet more people of different backgrounds, social groups, etc are shown. Alright Nintendo, we get it - you appeal to the masses. Get on with your presser!

0907: Exec VP Cammie Dunaway takes to the stage, with a picture of her Mii behind her. First sentence: “As you can see, my name is not Reggie.” That’s nice to know; now get off the stage and bring on Reggielution! She’s very annoying. “How great is it to work for a video games company … I can’t stop smiling!” Maybe it’s because she’s so relieved to have left Yahoo!. And she doesn’t like a smile taken off her face for anything. She tells some story about going snowboarding and falling over and how much that sucked, so she found a friend to help her.

0910: Cue curtain rise with ‘Shaun White Snowboarding’. Some long-haired guy who I assume is Shaun White is standing on one of two Wii Boards and demonstrates the game with jumps and all. His avatar falls down. He is actually Shaun White, an Olympic gold medallist. He says the board enhances the gameplay - he moves forward, it moves forward; he swerves, it swerves.

0912: Cammie has a go. She doesn’t seem to be smiling as much during it. She doesn’t completely fail though. Anyway it arrives exclusively for Wii by the year’s end. I assume that’s for North America only.

0914: Nintendo president Satoru Iwata comes on. His Mii has huuuuge glasses and looks a little grumpy. He says a shift has taken place in the gaming market. He says five years ago, everyone held a pessimistic view about Nintendo’s future. He says no Nintendo employees would have guessed they’d sell so many millions of bathroom scales (Wii Boards) around the world. Haaa. He says now they’re selling games that will sell for a looooong period of time, like Nintendogs and Brain Age. He says there will be more Mario and Zelda games, but says the market has opened to those who never considered video games before.

0918: A console is for life, not just for Christmas, intones Iwata, or something along those lines. Guitar Hero 3’s Wii version is apparently outselling the other platform versions. What can we expect next? People will get tired of new things because everyone will try to repeat other people’s past successes. There must be more ways for gamers to be engaged.

0922: First surprise…. Video of Katsuya Eguchi, creator of Animal Crossing… Animal Crossing: City Folk comes to Wii this year. No required goals, people can do things their own way. Feels like real-time. Even when you’re not playing, the animals still wake up and go to bed. Creepy. You can now explore a city, with an auction site and can buy or sell stuff. You can find out what other players are up to at the academy. You can visit a fashion designer. You can change your hairstyle or wear a mask and look like your Mii. You can write letters and send pictures to friends on their Wiis but also on their computers and cellphones.

Aagh! New Wiiware - WiiSpeak, a microphone for your Wii. A community microphone that lets a room of players speak with a room of players somewhere else in the world. You can chat while you play. You can go and spy on other people’s towns and find out what kind of people they are. You can make new friends with Nintendo… in case you’re incapable of talking to people irl.

0928: Reggie time! 10 million sales of Wiis in the US. 20 mil for DSes. Nintendo want to fill the needs of new and experienced gamers. He goes on about market results and strategies… look this up if you’re interested but I’m gonna skip it for sake of brevity and to give my fingertips a quick break. To sum it up, Nintendo has sold lots of stuff. They rule, apparently!

Hahah they started targeting females with celebrities like Nicole Kidman and suddenly the market doubled. As a girl, that advert has little to no effect on me. But then I guess I’m a “veteran gamer” so I don’t fit their target audience.

Bla bla bla, dozens of titles coming in the next few months. Preview is limited to three new games.

0936: First one - Star Wars: Clone Wars. You can use your Wiimote as a lightsaber. Hope it turns out better than Red Steel’s sword-wielding Wiimote. Out Holiday 2008. Second one - Raving Rabbids TV Party. Oh cool, there’s a video with a kid playing a motorcycle game using the Wiimote, nunchuck and sitting on the Wii Board to move around. Also you can surf through space on an ironing board. Obviously there’s a snowboarding game… though you (as a rabbid) are snowboarding on a moose. Looks much more fun than that earlier snowboarding game! Out Fall (autumn) 2008. Game three - Call of Duty: World at War. Lots of shooting. People using the Wii Zapper to shoot. Two can play that game. The gamers look tense. “Look behind you Molenski (sp?)!” the game shouts. Yes, look behind you at that girl who’s watching you guys play. She’s gonna knock you out with the Wii Board for leaving her out. No date, just “Coming Soon”.

0938: Cammie comes up for portable games. She shows us some figures on how females are buying more DSes. A game called Guitar Hero: On Tour Decades is on the way. And Will Wright’s Spore is coming out exclusively for the DS. You can share your songs with each other for Guitar Hero On Tour. They made a pick (a sort of plectrum used for strumming guitar strings) stylus and there’s some button pressing thing as well. Spore is good for the DS because you can use the stylus to drag parts over to your creature, says Spore lady. You can share creatures and they will appear in your zoo. Spore lady does a plug for how great the DS is.

0943: Cammie: I can add one more launch news to that list - the next invasion of Pokemon.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Stop flogging that dead horse already! Pokemon Ranger: Shadow of Alnia. Nov 10th in US.

Um wow. They have one more announcement: a custom version of Grand Theft Auto (choke) Chinatown Wars (/choke) arrives on DS this winter. Modern New Yo… I mean Liberty City, new characters, same freeranging gameplay. No video trailer. Boo.

0944: DS and air travel come together! You can now use the DS to control the plane! Don’t like the bratty kid sitting behind you? Blast him with the air conditioning! Feel like giving the lady in front of you a nervous breakdown? Make her oxygen mask drop down from the ceiling! Think the pilot is driving too slowly? Divert control to your DS and speed through airspace like a mad mofo! … I jest. They’re doing something so that your DS can tell you where to collect your luggage, find a nearby Mexican restaurant and an ATM, etc etc when you land. Still being tested… to incorporate those other things I mentioned! Muahahahaha!

And you can now check the scores of other live baseball games while you are watching a game. Umm okay, so you pay money for a ticket to see a game, then you spend the whole game finding out what’s going on elsewhere? You can probably even find out the score of the game you’re at - there’s no need to go through the painstaking effort of raising your head, thanks to the power of Nintendo!

Speaking of food, here’s another idea. Can the DS earn a spot in your kitchen? Surely it already does through Cooking Guide: Can’t Decide What to Eat? Well, there’s another new one, calling Cooking Navi, which sounds exactly the same as the former, coming November this year.

0946: Reggie comes back. They’re redefining the Wiimote with something that looks like a GIANT adaptor. Thanks but I’d rather keep my batteries. Oh they shrink it. Now it just looks like the balls for the peni… Wiimote. It’s called Wii Motion Plus and detects motion more sensitively. Ooooh, they’re going to demonstrate its power with the sequel to Wii Sports - Wii Sports Resort, a day at the beach. They’re gonna include the Wiimote add-on with every Wii Sports Resort game.

Cammie comes back to demonstrate one of the games: Disc Dog. They demonstrate the powers of the add-on, the Mii moves its wrist exactly as Cami moves hers, twisting, turning, upside down, the whole shebang. She ‘throws’ the frisbee. The dog misses. She tries again, the dog catches it. Applause all round for the dog.

Reggie shows us a game that’s more “his speed”. Jet-ski racing! Reggie does well then misses one. They make jokes about how men like things that are more powerful and Cammie likes the goggie game because it’s cute and guyrlsh love cuteshy wootshey things.

Third guy, whose name I didn’t catch, shows us another game: chopping stuff with a sword. Reggie and Cammie duel. Reggie wins and Cammie falls into the water. Cammie wins round two. Cammie and NoName leave the stage. Reggie says there are other games coming for Wii Sports Resort as well that they’ve not shown yet.

0953: Other developers will also get to have a go with making exciting games using the wiimote balls. Wii sports resort launches globally next spring. Reggie thinks there will be a lot more smiling faces, like the ones in the intro video. However, before that, Reggie wants to get everyone smiling in a whole new way. The stage goes black.

0955: Smoke appears, with white lights and some techno-rock music. We see someone sitting there with the Wiimote and nunchuck. He moves them. A game image of drums responds. The Wii Board is at his feet and the pedal responds when he taps it. He plays a lot of cymbals. Does he mean to hit the drumskins and miss, because he’s doing it an awful lot? Drum guy ends on a crescendo of cymbaling then bows like a rock star.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH IT’S SHIGERU MIYAMOTO! And he’s here to introduce Wii Music. He plays the sax. A mean sax. Well, as mean as you can with the Wiimote. Drum guy plays backup in the background. Miyamoto is wearing a Mario t-shirt.

0957: “Herrow,” says Miyamoto. “This year I would like to introduce you to Wii Music.” That’s all the English he can manage and NoName guy comes back to translate. Miyamoto looks like he is smiling more than all the people in the video at the beginning combined. They began developing Wii Music with all the Wii-series games, as it’s something everyone in the living room can enjoy playing. It’s different from all other music games, where you pressed buttons in time with something on screen. However, everyone, who can’t read music or play instruments, can enjoy playing Wii Music. There’s no need to follow rhythm guides when playing the game, all you have to do is move with the Wiimote and the Wii will play a note that matches the song. You can’t mess up! Miyamoto can’t play the sax, but he can press buttons on the Wiimote. He plays a tune from F Zero. Also, you can play the piano, violin, guitar, taiko (Japanese sideways) drum and other percussion. The drummer guy from earlier is a professional drummer, whose name, if I heard this right, is Ravi Drums. Wow, talk about following your name. Drum man was playing a different mode, which also includes lessons so you can learn to play the drum in real life without ever touching a real drum kit.

1003: Miyamoto remembers the time when he conducted an orchestra. He says that people on the internet said it was pretty bad. An orchestra game is included with Wii Music, as well as note-matching games. The game doesn’t evaluate your performance but records it. You can make your own music video by playing all the instruments separately then combining them together. However, they’re gonna play a song with everyone together. Up to 4 players but there are six instruments at one time. VP corporate affairs US Denise K-something comes along, with some other Nintendo people. Miyamoto plays the cowbell. Oh cute, they play the Mario theme tune. Other instruments I see include trumpets and a glockenspiel/xylophone. This is too adorable. Miyamoto does a cowbell solo and then they wrap it up with a big jump. Ravi Drums nods his head to the music as he walks off stage.

1007: Reggie and Cammie come back. They do a roundup of everything they’ve discussed. “Nintendo simply brings more smiles to more faces.” Baaarf. Reggie disses people for trying to copy the Wii. Nintendo are aiming for the next advantage, in look and in feel. Thanks for listening, says Reggie.

Well, that was E3 Nintendo. Thanks for bearing with me and look out for highlights of the conference coming soon on Shinohan’s Youtube page!

E3 2008 coverage - Microsoft Media Brief

July 14th, 2008

Yay here we go with more Shinohan updates. E3 started today and it kicked off with Microsofts Media Brief followed by Square Enix’s Press conference. The two most important pieces are up on Shinohan, and if you’re too laze to go over to Shinohan fear no more links are going to be supplied at the end of this post.

What did Microsoft show us today then? Obviously everything was based around the Xbox 360.

We had a quick preview of a live demo for Fallout 3 which started with a slightly funny as well as disturbing intro which resembled a hybrid of the 50s and very far in the future. Once the demo started you find yourself in a post apocalyptic Washington DC in the year 2277. From here on onwards it’s just your everyday FPS with weapons unique to the game, which is really all there is to the game from what has been shown.

Next down the line was Fable 2. Now a lot of people weren’t too happy with Fable in terms of what has been promised and what actually was delivered. This time around it shapes up to be pretty damn cool again, you create your own character, depending on your action you grow up to look like this and that, you can get married, have children and even watch them grow up. Your world evolves as you play and even that is based on your actions, now this makes the game unique to each and every individual playing the game which brings us to the next cool feature, instant invitation! You can invite a friend from buddy list straight into the game, no lobbies no delays. As his world will look different it’s a new game every time… or so Molyneux promises, I guess we will see.

Gears of War 2 shows what you expect really, a live crumbling world right in front of you, loads of aliens to blast into oblivion a very smooth covering system that even makes GTAIV look stiff and of course the Chainsaw gun thing. The chainsaw actually saws through enemies pretty smoothly from what I saw. The release date for Gears of War will be November the 7th 2008 so that’s that.

After that they kept on going on about thew new OS upgrade for the 360 with Avatars and what not, all kinda generic stuff which you expect to just happen rather than making a big fuss about it but well. Microsoft then went on trying to get a slice of the cake which solely belongs to Nintendo at the moment - which is of course trying to grab the casual gamer, and what easier way than with music games, oh and they also tried to re-invent eyetoy, marketing it as they’re the first one who ever tried.

President of Square Enix Yoichi Wada then came to the stage confirming the three titles for Xbox 360 which are The Last Remnant, Star Ocean 4 & Infinite Undiscovery which really isn’t ‘news’ per se… but wait he’s coming back to the stage? ‘There’s is one more thing’ he goes like Steve Jobs would do it and casually announces Final Fantasy XIII for the XBOX 360… and no this is neither a joke nor a typo. The only question I have is how they will do that, will the game come out on 20 DVD’s, or just be delivered with a harddrive as a standard?

Oh Capcom’s Resident Evil 5 was of course also part of the mix which showcased the Online co-op mode.

Final Fantasy XIII for Xbox 360

This is the kind of movie you’d expect from Japan

July 11th, 2008

Funky Forest (Naisu no mori in japanese) is Japan dough left in a drug fuelled movie making oven and baked at 1000 C for a half a year, and is a mind fuck of a movie. I would not know where to start explaining this crazy movie! Thankfully it’s 2008 and youtube.com can explain for me. It’s in Japanese with no sub’s, but I don’t think you’ll need them anyway

What’s your favorite Tetris piece?

July 7th, 2008

I think most people would automatically go for the long line piece, cos you can clear a whole bunch of the screen in one go. If you think about it, that piece is only useful in very specific circumstances, and you have to build your game around it. But, what’s the piece which can fit anywhere, any time, and will always bail you out of the world of crap about to fall on you??

It’s the T piece…man that one is a savior!
